Dusseldorf Germany

 

This is a city square called Burgplatz.  To the left of the Ferris wheel is the old castle tower, all that is left after a fire destroyed the rest of the palace over 100 years ago.  Now there is a museum in the tower.

Behind the tower, you can see the crooked steeple of St. Lambertus Basilika.  The story goes that it was built with wet wood and that it created a twist as it dried.

A view of the Rhine with the tower in the background.  There is a nice promenade along the river with cafes full of outdoor seating on one side.

We enjoyed walking along the promenade toward the tower.

The Rhine tower is a telecommunications tower.  There is a rotating restaurant and lookout area at the top of the tower.  It is the tallest building in Dusseldorf.

There is also a clock on the long tower base.  It is the largest digital clock in the world.  Starting from the top, there is 1 dot followed by 8 dots, which means 18 hours.  Then two red dots side by side are the break between the hours and minutes.  In the middle:  1 dot, then another dot means 11 minutes.  Two red dots now separate minutes and seconds.  Finally 4 dots and 2 dots at the bottom means 42 seconds.  So this photo was taken at 18:11:42.  A good time to get some dinner.  So we headed back to find a restaurant.

There are several nice things about old town.  First it is pedestrian only.  Second, it is full of great places to eat and little shops.  It is also full of people and there is a vibrant energy.

We enjoyed a nice dinner with our friends.  There was live music, happy people out enjoying the night, and great food.  It is so important to us to have these connections and special moments with friends.  A great night laughing, eating, and just enjoying our time.
