The first loose tooth is very exciting.  It is also a time of many questions.  Luie has been asking, “Is the tooth fairy always a girl?  What does the tooth fairy do with the teeth?  How does the tooth fairy know that I have a loose tooth?  Does the tooth fairy come to Gibraltar?”

So I set out to do some research.  It turns out that most of Europe is visited by either the tooth fairy or the tooth mouse. Below is a list of countries and the name given to the fairy or mouse.  The tooth fairy and the tooth mouse both exchange a prize for baby teeth.

Tooth Fairy

Gibraltar and U.K:  Tooth fairy

Germany:  Zahnfee

Norway: Tannefe

Ireland: Annabogle

Tooth Mouse

Spain: ratoncito Perez

France, Belgium, Switzerland, Morocco, Algeria, Luxemburg: (French speaking countries): la petite souris

I wasn’t able to answer all of Luie’s questions, but we did learn something new.  And the tooth fairy did come visit him in Gibraltar.  What did she/he bring?  A handful of pounds and pence were left in exchange for his tooth.  Making a happy little Luie man.  So happy, that he is already working on his next loose tooth.
