Christmas Crackers
A popular Christmas tradition in the UK. Two people pull on each end of the cracker. When it breaks apart, there is a pop. The one who wins the cracker gets the prize, hat, and joke inside. The crackers are usually opened at the Christmas dinner table. The jokes read aloud and the crowns worn during dinner.
The prizes inside the crackers vary a lot depending on how much you spend. You can buy a box of 6 crackers for £5, £10, £20 on up to £1200 or so.
History of the Christmas Cracker
In the 1800’s Tom Smith owned a confectioners shop in London. He took a trip to Paris and was inspired by bon bons wrapped in tissue paper. He introduced them to London and added a little love motto inside. He then wanted to make them more exciting and added the cracking mechanism. Over the years the crackers started to include little gifts along with the candy and motto. Today they also include a tissue crown hat.
Join us as we pull our first Christmas crackers. We had a lot of fun and will want to continue this tradition. You can make your own or you can buy them online.
