Walking through Prague Czech Republic
A map, a plan, and a picnic lunch, we are on our way!
Our first stop, the statue of St. Wenceslas on horseback at the top of Wenceslas Square, in the New Town.
The large impressive building behind St. Wenceslas is the Prague National Museum. And infront of St. Wenceslas are my two adorable kids, who were very good sports throughout our 8 mile walking tour of Prague.
Wenceslas Square is one of the two largest squares in Prague. The other being Old Town Square. This is actually more of a long boulevard than a square. The area used to serve as the old Prague horse market, over 600 years ago.
At the far end of the square there was a small outdoor market. During Christmas time, this area is bustling with a large Christmas market. That would have been fun to see.
The Estates Theater in the photo above is the oldest theater in Prague. It is located half way between the Wenceslas Square and the Old Town Square. Mozart conducted the world premiere of Don Giovanni here in 1787.
There are lots of Marionette puppets in shops all over Prague. There is also Marionette theaters. Interestingly, one of the performances they do is Mozart’s, Don Giovanni.
The unusual statue in the photo above is a depiction of Franz Kafka riding on the shoulders of a headless man. It is inspired by one of his short stories called “Discription of a Struggle.”
Franz Kafka was born in Prague. He was a novelist and short story writer who wrote in German. His writing was know to be complex and existentialist. He contracted Tuberculosis and died in 1924.
Prague honors him with plaques and signs on his residences and schools. There is also a Kafka museum.
Soaking up the ambiance of Prague.
Here we are near the Old Town Square, with the Tyn Church highlighted in the background.
The Jindrisska tower above, has views from the top. There are shops and restaurants on other levels of the tower.
There is just so much to see and do in Prague and we missed a lot. But we saw a lot too, and we loved it! Cameras full of pictures, 8 tired feet, and a great day!
Next stop……..England!
