Elbe Sandstone Mountains Germany
Elbsandsteingebirge (in German). The mountains are also referred to as Saxon Switzerland or Bohemian Switzerland.
This is a national park in eastern Germany about 2 hours drive south of Berlin. We were very lucky to have our friends recommend this place, or we would not have known about it.
As you will see in the photos below, it is beautiful, with sandstone formations that have been carved by erosion. It reminded us a little bit of the formations at Bryce Canyon in Utah.
This picturesque Bastei bridge was built in 1851. Bastei refers to towering rocks.
Different places along the bridge offer different amazing views.
A small space between the Bastei offers a glimpse of the Elbe river and valley below.
Dave took this great shot of the Bastei and the Elbe River. Something about the lighting, clouds, and impressive rock formation, makes this photo so compelling to me.
There are many trails through the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, and many steps. This area is popular for hikers and for climbers.
We loved walking through the rocks and the woods and spending time outside.
I thought the bridge was going to be the most picturesque place, but the trail had many beautiful places as well.
If you are anywhere near eastern Germany I would highly recommend stopping here. The views are stunning, especially in the fall with all the colors.
Great photos. Makes me want to go there! The photo of the stairs surrounded by moss covered rock walls, and the photo that looks between 2 peaks to the village below – are incredible. So fortunate to be able to enjoy with your beautiful family. Thanks for sharing.
