Enjoying Munich Germany

Written by Dave:  While we were arranging the sale of our camper and finalizing the details of our lease vehicle, we also had time to spend enjoying Munich Germany.  Our host we were renting from gave us tickets to enjoy the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra rehearsal at the Philharmonie in Gasteig.

The Philharmonie was quite impressive inside, with excellent acoustics.  We were seated above the orchestra, so Luie was able to enjoy watching them in action.  It was an excellent orchestra, and we all really enjoyed it.

After the performance, we were taken backstage for a tour, and Luie was even able to try his hand on one of the drums.  He started out quite shy, but warmed up to the idea quick enough.  He was able to create quite a rumble with the drum.

Afterwards, our host asked to meet us downtown in Munich later that evening so he could show us around some more and we could eat some regional specialties together.  We thought that was a marvelous idea, so we headed out to do some exploring before we met up again.

The square we arrived at from the S-bahn was beautiful.

We were glad to be exploring during off season, as it seemed much less crowded than it could have been.  Seeing the paintings by the arch, we had to go take a closer look.

We really do enjoy checking out the artwork each place we visit.

There were street vendors scattered about, and it was fun to see what some of the local specialties were.

I tried to convince Nancy that I should get a lederhosen and she should get a dirndl, but they were surprisingly more expensive I thought they would be.  I think that we could have really been the life of the party wearing these somewhere.  And it is really unlikely that anyone would have shown up wearing the same outfits.

Everyone was getting very hungry, so we stopped at a local shop, and asked what they would recommend.  This was highly recommended, so we gave it a try.  It was pretty good, and the sauerkraut was unlike any I had before.  It was delicious.

This was a butter shop near the market.  They sold just butter, and all different kinds of it.

Next to it was various types of cheese.  I have to say, cheese in Europe is incredible.

Of course, in the center of the market, there was a beer garden.  Again, they featured the one liter mugs of beer.

I remembered when I was a child, I really enjoyed getting a large pickle from the barrel at Hickory Farms.  So, when I saw them available in the market, I had to get each of the kids one.  They seemed to enjoy them.

Later we received a message from our host that he had an accident on his bike and he couldn’t meet us.  Unfortunately, he broke his wrist.  We were sad we didn’t get to spend more time with him, but glad that he wasn’t hurt any worse than he was.

The afternoon before we were to leave Munich, it started raining.  It then transitioned into slush, then full on snow.  It snowed through the night, and we woke to a completely different landscape.  We weren’t really ready for snow, but at least the roads were clear.  Over the course of nine days, we had transitioned from high 70’s on the Adriatic coast to snow in Munich.  Didn’t expect that, but it was beautiful in its own right.  We were now on our way to Frankfurt to pick up our lease vehicle, but I really would have liked to stay in Munich a bit longer.  Bavaria is beautiful, with an incredible amount to offer.
