Eating fresh figs in Croatia
Late summer is fig season. Fig trees thrive in warmer climates. I have read that some varieties of figs are very sweet, however, the figs that we ate were very mild.
We love eating fresh local organic produce wherever we go. We have enjoyed lots of apples, pears, peaches, nectarines, and figs while in Croatia.
To eat fresh figs, you just pull off the stem and eat. You can eat the skin and all. We tended to gently pinch and open the fig and eat it pink side up.
The inside of the fig is bright pink with small seeds. The inside is also very soft and jam-like.
Summer is tentative with her first bite. She thought the flavor was fine, but she was a bit put off by the seedy and slimy texture.
Luie approached it with gusto and happy enthusiasm.
After some research I found several people that recommended opening the top of the fig, putting in some smelly French cheese, and baking for a few minutes until the cheese melts. The combo of cheese and sweet is supposed to be very good as an appetizer.
Also, sliced fig and brie on top of a fresh baguette, as a quick and easy snack.
Both of these sound good to me. How do you like to eat your figs?
Yum. I just tried fresh figs for the first time myself while at Juan and Barb’s. Love the look on Luie’s face. 🙂
from Luie: Thank you Kim. Figs taste really good don’t they. Miss you guys.
I love figs!
Hi Juan, Do you prefer them fresh or do you have some great fig recipes?
I love figs!!! The Brie sounds delightful. One summer at priest lake, our host bought figs from Costco and filled them with a creamy goat cheese very nice indeed. Steve only likes fig bars nabisco I think.. Ha ha……..
Annette, the figs with goat cheese sound wonderful! I love goat cheese! Luie wants me to tell you that he thinks figs are great, and that he misses you guys!
Summer’s expression is much better than it was for sardines!
Hahaha. Yes, that is so true. She was much more opened minded to the idea of figs. But even the thought of the sardines was off putting for her.
