Experiencing Venice Italy

The sights, sounds, and smells

We have been focusing more and more on sensory experiences in the different places we visit.  When we remember Venice we think of pizza, live music in the square, the cool breeze during our gondola ride, nice cold gelato, reflections in the canals, the smell of great food drifting by, colorful masks, and more.

Summer with pigeon in Venice

The kids will always remember the pigeons in St. Mark’s square.  But sad Luie, try as he might, he never could get one to land on his head.  Summer, on the other hand, could hardly get them off her head.

Gelato in Venice, Italy

Venice in July is HOT.  We spent a lot of money on water to keep hydrated.  By mid-afternoon, we were ready for some nice cold gelato.  It was silky smooth and creamy and really hit the spot.  It almost seems like getting pizza and gelato in Italy should be required!

As the sun was setting, we let ourselves wander around and get lost.  We ended up in a more residential area where we could smell Italian food cooking and feel a cooler breeze.  Vibrant colors were reflected on the buildings and the water.

Venice made a lasting impression.

  1. Interesting the contrasts between your world and ours at this time! We just came home from the cabin after enjoying the rumbling of distant thunder, the gurgling of the creek in the darkness, the smell of grilling steaks and garlicky veggies, the sight of a magnificent sunset sneaking away behind the mountains…and we also went on a gondola ride, but it was a tramway going over the mountain at the Canyons Resort on Sat. morning, then we dined alfresco at Kneader’s.
