Views of Gruyères
Up the hill from the Gruyères Cheese Factory is the little town of Gruyères. In the photo below you can see the hill and the Gruyères Castle.
The cobblestone streets in town lead up to the castle. There are several parking areas lower down on the hill, because the town itself is pedestrian only.
Walking around this pretty little town we noticed all the wonderful looking little restaurants. Most all the menu boards that were sitting out advertized Gruyere fondue and meringues with double cream. Extremely tempting, but we opted to make our own fondue in the camper.
The views of the valley below are just spectacular.
We also visited the Gruyere Castle on our visit and that post will come later.
In the meantime let me share a mouthwatering Swiss recipe
Fondue
Recipes for fondue are diverse. But this recipe is similar to the recipe on the back of the fondue cheese package. I only made a few adjustments.
For four people, you need:
- 600-800g bread, cut into 2-3cm cubes
- 1 clove of garlic sliced and rubedb around fondue pan (I crushed 2 cloves and added them in)
- 1 cup dry white wine
- 400g each of Fribourg vacherin and gruyere cheese, grated (melt on a low heat, stirring gently)
- pepper, (to taste)
Dip your bread into the wonderful melty rich gruyere fondue. You cannot help but enjoy!
We also steamed up some potatoes and broccoli to dip in the fondue and everyone loved it!
