The Cote D’Azur by train

Traveling along the many beautiful cities of the Cote D’Azur can be difficult due to the traffic and parking, especially in a camper.  We prefer to park the camper and use the bus or the train.

5 tips for traveling by train on the Cote D'Azur

1.  Buy your ticket and validate it in the yellow automatic machines at the place where you get on the train.  Validate again when you leave your final destination (as listed on your ticket).  If you buy your tickets at the station, pick up a schedule and keep it handy so you know the departure times from each destination.

2.  Check the information boards at the platforms to make sure that you are waiting for the correct train that is going in your direction.  We initially assumed that the trains would be on the right side of the direction we needed to go, like the buses are.  However, this is not always the case.  The trains have doors on both sides, so you never know.  Also, the trains are not numbered like the buses.  However, sometimes they have an electronic display near the door to show the farthest destination in the direction that it is going.

3.  Riding the train is much smoother and more comfortable than riding the bus.  If you have a tendency to get motion sick, try to sit facing the direction of travel.  I would also recommend sitting on the Mediterranean side of the train for the best views.  The train does get busy, and it is not always possible to sit, so be prepared to find something to hang on to.

4.  Keep in mind that your ticket allows you to get off and explore other stops along the way between your starting and stopping points.  For instance, we started at Villeneuve Loubet and bought round trip tickets to our furthest destination, Monaco.  Then on the way to Monaco we stopped to check out the Medieval Eze village.  On the way back from Monaco, we also made an impulsive stop at Villefranche.  So we were able to explore 3 amazing cities with our one ticket.  It was a long day, but worth it.

5.  If you do happen to get on the wrong train.  Stop at the station and look for a man in a gray or white hat.  Even if they do not speak English, point to your destination on your train schedule and they will point out to you where you should be.

I love trains!  They are one of my favorite hobbies!
