Beautiful medieval Eze village is located high up on the cliffs between Monaco and Nice, France. We took the train and got off at the Eze Sur Mer stop. Then walked up to wait at the bus stop for the ride up to the village. There were many other tourists also waiting for the bus and so many of us had to stand as the bus wound its way up and around hairpin turns. It is important to hold on tight! If you are on the drivers side of the bus, you can see the village from a distance. Beautiful.
Once off the bus, walk up the hill. You can stop and talk to the people at the tourist information office to ask questions and get some information. There are also several perfumeries outside of the village. Continue walking up the hill and through the arched gate to the fortified village.
Narrow little roads lead either up or down and meander around past little shops, expensive hotels, galleries, and eateries.
The ancient stone walls, vines, and lanterns all add to the charm of the village.
The small plaza in front of the church is a great place for a picnic, since it has a lot more space than the narrow streets. It also has benches and a panoramic view of the hills and valleys in the distance.
If you are interested in having a picnic lunch, then I would suggest stopping at the Casino grocery store that is across from the bus stop, before walking up to Eze village. Since I did not see a grocery inside the village.
As you walk winding your way higher up in the village you will come to the Jardin Exotique. It is at the highest point of the village and promised views of the Mediterranean. However, there is an entrance fee, so we passed.
After leaving the village and walking back down the hill to the bus stop, we noticed this sign near a path. Apparently Nietzsche walked this path, cool!
One more quick note for anyone visiting Eze village. The day started out sunny with blue skies. But by mid afternoon it was completely clouded over and we were rained on and not prepared. We noticed then that the hills in this direction are often surrounded by clouds by about 2:00 in the afternoon. So pack a light raincoat and/or umbrella, even if it is sunny.
