The first day of the Cannes Film Festival
The opening movie to the film festival was The Great Gatsby. Access to films in the official selection is by invitation only. So our goal of the day was to see some movie stars. We were not the only ones with this agenda. Still we were able to find a place about 50 feet from the red carpet. However, our vision was significantly blocked by the photo journalists. But we were happy to get the rare glimpse of the stars. Also, there were large screens set up so that we had a great view from the screen.
Unfortunately it started to rain shortly after we arrived. We were not anticipating the rain and so were unprepared. But no one wanted to leave before getting a glimpse of the movie stars. So we made the best of it.
Smart little Luie was able to keep mostly dry by hiding between the rest of us.
I took pictures from the screen since they had a much better view point of the red carpet. That is why the pictures seem to have color distortions.
The photo above is of many of the members of the jury for the 66th Cannes Film Festival. They are the people who decide which films will be awarded.
Steven Spielberg is the president of this years jury. And Nicole Kidman is a member of the jury.
Toby Maguire and Carey Mulligan (above) are both in the movie, The Great Gatsby. As is Leonardo Dicaprio.
Beautiful Julianne Moore. I think seeing her was the highlight of Dave’s night.
Leonardo Dicaprio spent time signing autographs for people along the street after he got out of his car. And he waved at me! Of course he also waved to the other people in the crowd on the west side of the red carpet.
Summer said she saw Leo and some other actors. LOL apparently Leo was her favorite too. 🙂
Well, actually she has never seen him in a movie. Sometimes I forget how young she is. Anyway, Leo got the biggest crowd reaction so I think that is how she knew he was a big deal.
I used to tutor a little boy whose parents were television celebrities. His mom went to Cannes for this film festival. We get tired of Sundance here because of the crowds and impossibility to get anywhere, but I think there is much more room where you are. Luie looks so cute surrounded by the forest of legs!
I know what you mean about the crowds. It is a bit of chaos. They closed down one street for pedestrian traffic and they have police at every corner helping to direct traffic and pedestrians. We started to feel a bit claustrophobic. But we keep telling ourselves that “We are in CANNES, so just enjoy it!”
