Europa Point
Located at the southern most tip of Gibraltar. We decided that if we started walking and just headed south, we would eventually find it. Sidewalks ended. Narrow tunnels came into view and we questioned whether or not we were going the right direction. Fortunately we met other walkers and they assured us that we should just continue walking and we would get there.
It was uncomfortable to be inside the tunnel when a car came through. But we stayed close to the edge.
This waterfall is from the outlet of the desalination plant that supplies Gibraltar with fresh water.
The Europa Point lighthouse
The lighthouse was completed in 1841 and is the only lighthouse outside of the UK that is operated by the Trinity House. It stands 50 meters above the sea and the light can be seen for 20+ miles.
Off in the distance you can see north Africa. It is only 15.5 miles away.
This is the view east of the lighthouse.
There are several picnic areas near the lighthouse. And this time we came prepared! Also, there is a playground, so Luie instructed me to take pictures of him trying out the equipment. He said that he needs to do another blog post. So that will come later.
Europa point is quite windy and this time of year it is also quite brisk. So we did not stay too long. But we had a good 3 mile walk and took the bus back into town. Dave and I are always amazed how the big buses can navigate through the narrow streets and thread through the narrow tunnels. I was sitting in a window seat and I leaned way over thinking that we were going to scrape the sides of the tunnel. But we made it through with no problem.
Are there ferries to North Africa from Gibraltor?
Oh yes! We plan on going over to Morocco. But probably not for a month or so. That will be fun!
