We have taken the opportunity to stay in southern Spain and now in Gibraltar, for longer periods of time. So it made sense for us to find rental housing. Our apartment in Gibraltar has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. Prices in Gibraltar are most certainly higher than in Spain, and not as many vacant properties. We always look for vacation rentals since they are furnished and often include kitchenware as well. However, vacation rentals also typically charge a premium. We have the advantage of traveling during the winter low season, when there is more availability and often you can negotiate on price. We have learned that it pays to check with multiple companies or owners and always let them know your budget. We email 3-5 places several weeks before our arrival date and narrow it down from there. We like to schedule two or three places to look at on the day of arrival. But in Gibraltar we set up our apartment blind, since we could not drive our camper here (no parking). We were fortunate to get this apartment for ₤1100/month. Many 1 bedroom apartments rent for £1000 up to over £2000/month. Of course location, view, and amenities make a big difference. We only have views of the building next to us. But we are very near Main St. It is an older building that has been renovated. Which means that all the doorways are short and Dave has hit his head 3 times on the top of the door frames. He is still learning to duck, and is banned from wearing a baseball cap in the house.
We are very much enjoying our time in Gibraltar. We are walking distance to everything. Of course that is the joke here, that everything in Gibraltar is within walking distance. We still have much to discover here. But we are also making the most of our time in our apartment, especially with the rain we have been having over the last few days. Summer is writing and illustrating books and learning more songs on the guitar. Luie is enjoying reading, watercolor painting, drawing, and writing sentences. Dave and I are working on a book as well. Lots of plans for the future. These are exciting times!
Note from Dave: This shower requires a degree in engineering to figure out how to run it. It looks really cool in concept, but there is a steep learning curve.
(More from Dave) Many of the walls in the flat are solid concrete, which drastically diminishes the WiFi signal through the house. Speaking of internet, it is not the cheapest thing to set up here. £50 for the phone hook-up, required whether you want it or not. £50 for the internet hook-up. After that, £24 for up to 4Mbps download and up to 512 kbps upload. As we require a solid internet connection with no limits on data, the wireless plan is not an option for us. We are settling in for some focus on work, but will still get out to enjoy our surroundings as the weather gets better.
But, isn’t it great how soundproof it is? Enjoying everyone’s blogs tremendously.
Thanks Bonnie. Blogging has become fun for the whole family!
Love seeing and getting the pictures of your new temporary surroundings. We love reading of your adventures! S sorry to read and see the precious Saffiron story, we felt so bad for you all. Mind your head Dave!! As they say in England!!!! Annette
Thanks Annette! We are very much enjoying our time. But we do miss Saffron terribly. Dave has gotten in the good habit of ducking for all doors now. I love your comment “Mind your head.” You are so right, that is exactly what they say!
so you’ve moved! Did you take the dog? I hope so. 🙂
They sent it to Germany! At least it has a good home 🙂
Shoulda sent it to Kim ; )
Tony and I had a shower like that in Moldova. It reminded me of a rocket ship when we first saw it. I loved that shower, but you’re right, bit of a learning curve. Love your place. Looks lovely.
Thanks Nancy! We love the shower too, although we have not yet figured out how to use all the features. We are enjoying our time in Gib and happy to have so much space.
I know! I loved it. It looked like my John!
