In Flemish and Dutch, it’s spelled Brugge and pronounced Broo-gah. In French and English, it’s spelled Bruges and pronounced Broozh.
We completely fell in love with Brugge. Maybe it was the beautiful sunny day, the happy family, the amazing history and architecture, or maybe it was the smell of chocolate in the air. Whatever it was, it was a magical combination. Belgium is famous for its waffles, chocolate, and beer. Waffles were sold everywhere, and there were multiple chocolate shops on every block, at one place 3 in a row. Heaven!
Brugge was a bustling city with an important trade port, but when the harbor silted up and trade stopped in the 16th century, the economy collapsed. This stalled any change or development and is the reason that it is a well preserved gothic city.
Windmills, canals, ancient buildings, cafes, and shops, I just can’t get enough!
The plaque on this building states that it was built in the 1500’s. Wow!
The Belfry.
I see Summer managed to find the cupcakes!
How beautiful! hahaha Susan I noticed that too! I was going to say that I like the one of Summer drooling of the cupcakes. 🙂
Okay well maybe not drooling. 😉
oh and so far I’m really loving Brugge!
Wow how lucky you are! Chocolate Lover
Brugge was one of my favorite cities in Europe also. All that chocolate! And it was the 1st place that we saw a windmill.
Yes! Brugge is just wonderful. We are hoping we can get back there again before our trip is done.
