The coast at La Jolla (pronounced la-HOY-a)  is rugged and beautiful.  There are many small cove like beach areas.  The beach that we were most interested in is called Children’s Pool.  In 1931 a sea wall was built to create a safe swimming area for children.  Then the seals began using this protected beach.  Now the beach is shared by seals and people.  We happened to get there at low tide, which was perfect for swimming and photography.

Seeing the seals was a fun surprise for the kids.  We didn’t tell them ahead of time, in case the seals weren’t there.  But we were in luck.  We got a big check mark on Summer’s happy list.

We asked if the kids wanted to swim with the seals.  Summer did but she was a bit apprehensive.  Luie did too, but only walking out in ankle deep water.  Summer decided to wait until we came back another time.  But after talking about it she agreed that when you have an opportunity, you should take it.  And no regrets!

Now that’s a happy girl!

  1. What total fun! I’ve never seen seals outside the zoo. That will be a memory that will last forever.

  2. What a great thing to instill in your kids, “When you have the opportunity, take it, and no regrets!” words to live by…
